Iran (IMNA) – Saeed Iravani, Iran’s UN envoy, delivered this message in a letter dated Wednesday to the UN Security Council, as reported by Press TV. The letter was sent in response to ongoing efforts by the UK, France, and Germany—collectively known as the E3—to restore sanctions. These countries, along with the United States, have submitted an anti-Iran resolution to the UN nuclear watchdog, aiming to trigger the re-imposition of sanctions.
This move aligns with Western accusations that Iran seeks to develop nuclear weapons—a claim the UN nuclear watchdog has never confirmed, despite conducting its most stringent inspections to date.
Iravani condemned the Western initiative as a “legally baseless and politically reckless act, with profoundly destabilizing consequences for regional and international peace and security.” He reiterated Iran’s previous warnings that it would consider a “proportionate response,” including initiating the process of withdrawing from the NPT in accordance with Article X, which allows a state to exit the treaty if “extraordinary events” threaten its supreme interests.
The envoy also rejected as “utterly baseless” the European trio’s allegations that Iran has altered its defensive doctrine to pursue nuclear weapons, describing the campaign as “a deliberate attempt to manufacture a crisis.”
“Iran’s nuclear policy is unequivocally peaceful, rooted in both legal commitments under the NPT and a deeply held religious and strategic defensive doctrine prohibiting weapons of mass destruction,” Iravani stated. He added that Iran remains committed to pursuing a negotiated solution that provides sufficient assurances regarding the peaceful nature of its nuclear program.
